China and Russia back Iran’s ‘peaceful’ nuclear program

TOKYO — China and Russia on Friday backed Iran’s repeated claims that its nuclear program is “peaceful in nature,” as the Middle Eastern country faces renewed international scrutiny.

In a joint statement after a trilateral ministerial meeting in Beijing, the trio called for diplomatic talks based on mutual respect and an end to the unilateral sanctions imposed by the U.S.-led international community against Tehran.
