Manchester United heavily involved in race to sign Atalanta star Ademola Lookman – Man United News And Transfer News

Date:

Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Ademola Lookman from Atalanta.

Lookman, who represented England at youth level, is enjoying the most prolific spell of his career in Italy under Gian Piero Gasperini.

The 27-year-old versatile forward struggled to impress at Fulham and Leicester City during his time in the Premier League. But at Atalanta, he has been transformed into one of the best players in Serie A.

Under Gasperini’s tutelage, the Nigeria international has scored 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions this term.  However, his long-term future in Bergamo has come into question after Gasperini’s harsh comments about his penalty-taking skills.

Manchester United compete for Ademola Lookman

According to CaughtOffside, Lookman is a “player in demand” ahead of this summer’s transfer window, being chased by as many as seven Premier League clubs.

United are understood to be keen on securing his signature, as they look to strengthen their toothless attack.

The likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund have struggled to properly make their mark under Ruben Amorim.

Further, it is suggested that the Red Devils might need to replace wingers like Jadon Sancho and Antony at the end of the campaign. Big money flops Sancho and Antony are currently on loan at Chelsea and Real Betis respectively.

The report claims both players are “likely to leave the club permanently and Manchester United will need a quality attacker at their disposal.”

Lookman is capable of playing on the flanks, in midfield, and as a lone striker. As such, his arrival would hand Amorim multiple creative answers.

It is believed that Atalanta will demand €65 million to sanction Lookman’s exit this summer. The Nigerian is certainly an exciting option for United but his price tag appears high considering his underwhelming Premier League record.

Further, he will enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer, meaning Atalanta might be forced to lower their demands to avoid losing their talisman for nothing in 2026.
