Singapore dissolves parliament, paving way for election

SINGAPORE — Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved parliament on Tuesday on the advice of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, setting the stage for a general election that will allow Wong to seek his first mandate as leader of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said nomination day — the official start of the campaign period — will be on April 23.
